Messaging Fundamentals
SMS (Short Message Service)
A text messaging service that allows sending messages up to 160 characters. Used for alerts, confirmations, and engagement campaigns.
MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service)
Supports images, audio, and video. Useful for branded communications or event promotions. Not currently supported. Coming soon.
Message Segment
Messages exceeding 153 characters (GSM-7) or 67 (Unicode) are split into segments. Each segment counts as a billable message.
Sender ID / Short Code / Long Code
Short codes are 5–6 digit numbers for high-volume messaging. Long codes (10DLC) are standard 10-digit numbers for lower volumes. WordFly does not currently support Short Codes.
Toll-Free Number Sending (Canada Only)
In Canada, messages can be sent from verified toll-free numbers (e.g., 800, 888). Must be pre-registered for A2P use.
Alphanumeric Sender ID
A text-based sender name (e.g., "WordFly"). Common outside North America. Not supported in the U.S. or Canada.
International Number Format (E.164)
Standardized global number format required for SMS delivery (e.g., +14165551212). All imports must use this format. Ideally, numbers are collected in this format.
Compliance & Consent Management
Opt-In
Subscriber consent to receive SMS messages. Required for TCPA and GDPR compliance.
Double Opt-In
Two-step confirmation process ensuring valid consent.
Opt-Out / STOP
Mechanism allowing users to withdraw consent. Automatically suppresses future sends. Integrated with Tessitura.
Compliance
Adherence to TCPA, CTIA, GDPR, CASL rules. Includes disclosure language and opt-out mechanisms.
Delivery & Carrier Mechanics
Number Validation
Verifies that a phone number is correctly formatted and active.
Carrier Validation
Checks that a number can receive SMS from specific carriers, improving deliverability.
10DLC (10-Digit Long Code)
U.S. A2P framework requiring registration for brand and campaign approval.
Campaign Registry (TCR)
Central body managing A2P 10DLC registrations for approved brands.
Keyword
Designated word subscribers text to opt-in or trigger automation (e.g., 'JOIN').
Throttling
Controls message send rate per second or minute to maintain compliance.
Queuing
Staging messages for delivery, managing sequencing and retries.
Suppression List
List of numbers excluded from sends due to opt-out or invalid status.
Delivery Receipt (DLR)
Carrier confirmation of successful or failed delivery.
Unicode Support
Allows special characters beyond GSM-7 encoding but increases segment count.
