It's helpful to understand a basic definition of email client and how those are recorded from devices to platforms.

What exactly is an email client? The web definition is: an application that runs on a personal computer or workstation and enables you to send, receive and organize e-mail.
Common email clients include:
- Microsoft Outlook
- Apple Mail
- IBM Lotus Notes
- Mozilla's Thunderbird
- and many more!
Now we have the ability to open our emails across multiple devices. You can open an email on your desktop computer, your tablet and your mobile device all in one day. These are all platforms for viewing the email.
When WordFly collects and reports on email clients we are looking at both the email client and the platform used to open the email.
Platforms are separated into Desktop, Webmail, Mobile and Other.
Examples of each platform and corresponding email client:
- Desktop :: Microsoft Outlook
- Webmail :: Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, Comcast
- Mobile :: iPhone and Android
You might have some questions about WordFly's email client reporting, here are a few of the most common questions:
How far [in time] back does email client reporting go?
Email client reporting is available for any Campaign sent after December 2011.
When is email client reporting available for a sent campaign?
Email client reporting should be available immediately but there can be delays up to 24 hours.
What does 'other' mean?
Under "All Platforms Combined", "other" is anything else not listed under "All Platforms Combined", it's not just confined to the "Other" that showed up under another section.
What does 'unknown' mean?
If an email client shows up as "unknown," then it means that the external service WordFly uses to map email clients couldn't identify it. In the past, we've seen this with universities and companies that build their own custom email server applications. They aren't common known clients, so our service doesn't know what they are.
Why do 'top mobile clients' have similar devices?
If you're seeing iPhone and iPad in the "top mobile clients" it could mean they are using any email account that can be hooked up in the device or they are accessing the email via Safari on their iPhone or iPad device.
Will we ever be able to see the app (Gmail app, Outlook app etc) a mobile user is using?
Currently the user agent information that we get back identifies a users operating system (e.g Windows/OSX), platform (e.g mobile, desktop) and client (e.g Android, Blackbery, Windows Live etc). Unfortunately, we cannot determine at this point the specific app the user was using on their mobile phone. We're always looking for ways to improve the email client reporting so we'll be sure to add specific apps when we are able to!
